IMAGING GLOSSARY
Pixel (imaging)An abbreviated version of the term PIcture (X) ELement.
This is the most fundamental element of a digital image. A digital image
is made up of rows and columns of points of light. Each indivisible point of
light is a pixel.
Each pixel in an image is addressed by its column (x) and its row (y)
usually written as the coordinate pair (x, y).
An 8-bit pixel can take on one of 256 values. A 24-bit pixel has 3, 8-bit
components for each of the primary colors, red, green, and blue.
