IMAGING GLOSSARY

Kernel (image processing)

A small matrix of pixels, usually no bigger that 9x9, that is used as an operator during image convolution.

The kernel is set prior to the convolution in a fashion that emphasizes a particular feature of the image.

Kernels are often used as spatial filters, each one tuned to a specific spatial frequency that the convolution is intended to highlight
