IMAGING GLOSSARY
Kernel (image processing)A small matrix of pixels, usually no bigger
that 9x9, that is used as an operator during image convolution.
The kernel is set prior to the convolution in a fashion that emphasizes a
particular feature of the image.
Kernels are often used as spatial filters, each one tuned to a specific
spatial frequency that the convolution is intended to highlight
